Rosser Newton is a Dallas businessman, energy investor, and author with more than 35 years of experience in energy banking, private equity, and company leadership.
He is the founder of Petro Capital Group, a Dallas investment firm established in 2002 that provides growth capital to companies in the oil, gas, and oilfield services industries. A native Texan, Newton is also the author of Richard Coke: Texan, a biography of the fifteenth governor of Texas published in November 2024.
Career
As founder and managing partner of Petro Capital Group, Newton oversees the firm's investment strategy, including sourcing opportunities, evaluating transactions, supporting portfolio companies, and guiding successful exits. He serves on the Petro Capital Funds Investment Committee and has built a career around working closely with management teams rather than acting as a passive investor. Throughout his career, he has served as chairman or director of numerous energy companies, including EagleRidge Energy, Arctic Acquisition, Cougar Pressure Control, and Platinum Pressure Services. Earlier in his career, he also served as chairman of NitroLift Holdings, LLC and as a director of Shack Energy Services.
Rosser Newton began his career in corporate finance at Goldman Sachs in New York, where he worked as an analyst from 1987 to 1989. His experience in energy investment banking provided the foundation for the career that followed. Over the next decade, he developed expertise in raising capital and investing in privately held energy businesses before founding Petro Capital Group in 2002. Since then, his investment philosophy has remained consistent, partnering with companies where active board involvement, operational understanding, and long term value creation are central to every investment.
Education
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Vanderbilt University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and received the university's class writing award for journalism, along with awards for distinction in political science and French. He later earned his Juris Doctor from The University of Texas School of Law and passed the Texas Bar Examination in 1992.
Texas history
Newton's interest in Texas history began during his years at Vanderbilt, where he developed a fascination with the state's nineteenth century history and the life of Richard Coke, the fifteenth governor of Texas and later an eighteen year United States senator. As an indirect descendant of Governor Coke, he became interested in the historical record surrounding both the man and the Reconstruction era, believing that many aspects of Coke's life and leadership had received limited scholarly attention.
That interest eventually became Richard Coke: Texan, published on November 4, 2024, by Stoney Creek Publishing Group, a member of the Texas Book Consortium affiliated with Texas A&M University Press. In recognition of his work, the Texas Senate honored Newton through Senate Resolution 520 during the 89th Texas Legislature, adopted without objection, with every member of the Senate joining as a co-author. He has also presented his research at the annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association. His other books include Reflections on Love, Time and Nature and The Need for a Little More.
Civic life
Newton serves as a trustee of the Dallas Historical Society and is co-chair and a founding member of the Alamo Letter Society, an organization dedicated to placing bronze plaques displaying William B. Travis's famous 1836 Victory or Death letter in county courthouses throughout Texas. He is also a founding member of the Dallas Arboretum Foundation and serves as Director Emeritus of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.
Outside of his professional work, Newton enjoys fishing, hiking, and collecting Texas historical memorabilia. Whether evaluating an energy investment or researching a historical figure, Newton approaches each endeavor with the same emphasis on firsthand evidence, careful analysis, and long term perspective.
